From
Steel To
Scholars
In
2002, the Regional Chamber created and launched
its From Steel To Scholars (STS) education initiative. Since then, the
initiative has taken shape as a community-wide campaign to improve the
quality
of education in the 45 school districts of Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull
counties. The Mahoning
Valley
was once a world class producer
of steel, which fueled a growing local economy through the 20th century
and led
to the Valley’s work ethic and skills becoming known as
“best in class.” With
the same “best in class” work ethic and skills, we
are
focusing on becoming a
world-class producer of scholars in the 21st century. Our community has
to
support and encourage the strengths and values necessary to succeed in
this age
of technology, information and knowledge.
Thanks
to the efforts of U.S. Representative Tim Ryan (D-17), the Chamber
received a
$585,280 grant from the U.S. Department of Education to fund From Steel
To
Scholars (80%) and a unique partnership between Youngstown State
University and
NEOUCOM (20%) to increase the number of traditionally underrepresented
groups
in science, technology, engineering, math and medicine, through the
creation of
the STEMM Career Academy.
The
Chamber utilized its portion of
the grant to launch the From Steel To Scholars education/public
awareness
campaign and worked with media partner WYTV—which stepped up
for
the cause in
November 2004 and has run special STS reports every Tuesday evening
since—to
further communicate the importance of the initiative. Through
television and
radio spots, billboards, print ads and live primetime specials, our
message
reached thousands in the community, resulting in a thorough knowledge
of why
school achievement testing and school district rankings are significant
for an
improved future economy in the Valley.
As the Regional
Chamber secures
additional funding for STS, the awareness campaign will continue to
bring to
light information our community may use to obtain a brighter future for
the Mahoning
Valley.
