Priority Project #14

US 422 Widening

Weathersfield Township, Trumbull County

(8th Ranking Road Project)

Request Overview:

The project is included in the Eastgate Long Range Transportation Plan. Preliminary Engineering has not been started.  The local community is requesting $3,640,000 (or 80 percent) of the total anticipated cost of $4,558,000. No funding has yet been programmed for any project.

Project Description:

The project would begin at Girard’s north corporation limit in the vicinity south of Washington Avenue and extend north to approximately .1 mile south of the intersection of Niles Vienna Road at US 422. Its total length will be 1.36 miles.

Between Washington Avenue to Niles Vienna Road, a four lane cross section exists through SR 169 in McKinley Heights.  At that point, the lanes taper down to three lanes to a point approximately .1 mile south of the intersection of Niles Vienna Road at US 422. The cross section then flares out to 5 lanes continuing north.  Surface width varies between 34 to 64 feet.

Project Cost:

Preliminary Engineering at 11 percent:   $   501,000

ROW                                                               $1,700,000

Construction                                                     $2,357,000

Total project cost:                                             $4,558,000

However, because of extensive right of way impacts on the north side of SR 169 (anticipated number of parcels impacted is 30+), serious consideration is being given to a four lane structure.  If that is the final configuration, the cost will be reduced to $2.9 million.

Economic Impact:

Due to heavy traffic surrounding this area, considerable congestion and safety issues have arisen. Because the road narrows and widens at various points, there is a serious safety hazard. By making these improvements, traffic congestion in the surrounding area will be relieved, thereby improving safety and access to the local commercial area.

Current Status:  1/17/06

Funding was secured for the widening of US 422 through Girard from the TEA 21.  US422 widening through Girard under construction. No action on US422 between north Girard corporate limit and existing four lane in Niles. Funding requested in 2006 Appropriation Bill for $501,000(Eng.) through Congressman Ryan and US Senators Voinovich and DeWine. ODOT inquired with county to be sponsor. $800,000 was received through Ryan and DeWine to help move forward. North Road in Trumbull County hearing is done and right of way is being secured.  Goes out for bid June 30th.
